Kaare M. Nielsen is a Professor of pharmaceutical microbiology at the Department of Pharmacy, the University of Tromsø, Norway. Nielsen holds a Ph.D in biology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, and has completed postdoctoral studies in Germany (BBA), The Netherlands (IPO-DLO) and the USA (Harvard University). Nielsen is attached to GenØk as an scientific adviser. Nielsen’s research group focuses on understanding the molecular mechanism behind, and the ecological effects and evolutionary impacts of horizontal transfer of genes into various organisms. The research strategy includes both theoretical and experimental approaches. He has also contributed to Biosafety-capacity building initiatives in a number of countries around the globe.
