Jack Heinemann is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand and adjunct professor of gene ecology at GenØk - Centre for Biosafety in Tromsø, Norway.
He received his PhD at the University of Oregon studying the genetics of interspecies gene transfer. Since that time his research has centred around the theme of how horizontal (infectious) reproduction strategies influence the evolution of both deleterious and adaptive traits. This work has lead to insights into how human activities influence the evolution of antibiotic resistance and virulence traits. These trait histories are not always intuitive and thus can tempt us to release technologies that will have environmental answers we did not predict. Jack also is working on issues of importance to sustainable agriculture and biosafety and is listed as a biosafety expert on the UN Roster.
